Deputy Liam McKenna is a nice guy. He is the kind of guy you want to be your friend, the one who will always come when you call. You would trust him with your life, your money and even your baby sister. But fate just keeps tossing temptation in front of him; so how long does he think he can ignore it?

Just being that good guy gets him the job of looking after his boss, the sheriff's, daughter; his sexy, tempting, uncontrollable daughter. For Liam, Carly Taggert is that itch that just won't go away. Finding her hobbling on home with ripped clothing, a sprained ankle, and an attitude the results of a date gone very wrong, only adds to the temptation and brings out the ugly side of him...this guy is going to pay for whatever he did even before the sheriff can get to him! Jealous, confused and tempted, Liam's life is now spinning out of control.

But Carly has a dream that doesn't quite mix with Liam's plans. Carly wants to be a mother! By applying to be a foster parent, Carly sets her dream in motion much to the dismay of Liam. He knows the foster care system, he is an adopted child out of foster care but he was one of the lucky ones. He knows what can happen to a child in the system and he would like to spare Carly the heartbreak and disappointment he knows is headed her way.

Just as their relationship gets started and heated after an unexpected kiss, a young child is delivered to her door and throws her new world into a spin. While Liam tries to understand and except Carly's decisions, their new found relationship takes a hard hit and is relegated to the back burner. Heartbreak, heartache, family, careers and total confusion are in store for these two lovers but will they ever find their happily ever after?

I do admit I had a difficult time with the beginning of this story. It moved slowly and the dialogue was not very engaging but it did pick up steam as it went along. Unfortunately by then my interest in the hero and his girl had waned. A sub-plot, though, was a well formulated surprise and completely engaged me so that by the end of the story I was a more entertained than I had thought I would be.

The characters are gutsy and stubborn and a perfect match for each other. Liam really is that great guy that is just afraid to take that first step, but wishes he does..watch out!! Carly is the indulged, intelligent girl that was everyone's kid sister who unexpectedly grew up. But she did manage to catch the eye and the heart of the one great guy. Sit down and enjoy a few hours with a great guy and his girl!

The Sheriff's Daughter by Kay Stockham starts off another moving story in her new North Star Montana series.

Deputy Liam McKenna enjoys his work upholding the law in North Star, Montana. He gets along well with the community and his fellow law enforcement co workers. Liam highly values his relationship with his boss Jonas Taggert. When Jonas and his wife Rissa take a much needed vacation, Liam agrees to step in to make the town run smoothly. The one problem is keeping an eye on Carly Taggert, the sheriff's daughter.

Carly Taggert seems to have a knack for finding trouble. Its never anything to serious but if something goes wrong Carly will usually be in the center of it all. She is not to happy when she notices Liam McKenna is dogging her every move. Liam has always looked out for her growing up and is a much needed friend. But Carly is finding her feelings for Liam are changing from friendship to something more.

Liam in trying to keep Carly safe is discovering that he is immensely attracted to her. Even after they give into their passions for each other, Liam feels that he isn't the guy Carly needs in her life. Now Carly she has other ideas on that subject.

Watching these friends relationship grown and change is delightful. At times it really tugs at your heart and you hope they can work it all out. Carly and Liam both are molded by their past and will take a lot of give and take to make it as a couple. It was an added treat to revisit past characters from Kay Stockham's books. This book will stay in your heart and make you want the next book as soon as possible.
Kay Stockham is a recent discovery for me, but she is far and away one of my favourite category writers. She has that voice that draws you into a story and won't let you go, and I've been found reading and loving books by her with themes I would never go near if handled by other writers.

Caroline Taggert's father and stepmother have finally gone on the cruise that had been planned for a long time. In his wake, the sheriff has asked his deputies to keep their eye on his `sensible but prone to get in trouble because of her tender heart' daughter. Carly's freedom doesn't get off to a good start, with Deputy Liam McKenna finding her limping down a road at night after being assaulted and dumped by her date. Things go from bad to worse when Liam discovers Carly has become a foster mother behind everyone's backs, and has taken a malnourished child into her house.

The Sheriff's Daughter is an extremely emotional story, which builds and builds until I found myself getting all teary a few times towards the end.

Carly is the kind of heroine I would usually run a mile from. Her goals in life are to stay in her small town forever, and to have lots of babies. These are not things I understand, and yet the author got me into her head and understanding the character's motivations.

Liam was frustrating but realistic in the way he dealt with problems around him. His odd behaviour stemmed from some pretty terrible experiences, so he was forgiven. His motivation for the most part was to keep the people he loved - but refused to admit he loved - from getting hurt. He had to learn that was something he simply wasn't always going to be able to do.

I look forward to the rest of the stories in this series.
