Up and Down in the Dales Gervase Phinn Books

One has to rank this delightful series with James Herriot's books describing his years as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales. The difference is that, as a school inspector, Gervase Phinn's subjects are children and their teachers, rather than animals.

Phinn has a genuine love for the children, and for the Yorkshire countryside, and he describes both with feeling and a great deal of humor. He himself is an extremely sympathetic character, and to read these books is almost like spending time with a companion who takes his work seriously but does not take himself too seriously; someone who is deeply interested in the kids' lives and who is dedicated to improving their education.

The books can stand alone, but are better read in order. Highly recommended.

Up and Down in the Dales Gervase Phinn Books Reviews

Very funny- some great recollections
Thank goodness I have discovered the wonderful prolific writer of the Yorkshire Dales, Gervase Phinn. His marvelous stories about his life as an English school inspector were a daily breath of fresh air as I moved from chapter to chapter, learning about Mr. Phinn, his worthy colleagues and the many bright and entertaining children he visited throughout Yorkshire. Highly recommended for teachers and any adult who has not lost the child in themselves.
Gervase Phinn's The Dales series are just so funny. Anyone wishing to brighten their day should pick up a book in this series.
This whole series is a hoot. Everyone who has ever been a teacher, everyone who has ever been in a classroom will delight in these books. They are not only fun but they raise some interesting contrasts between British and American schooling. After retirement I did substitute teaching for nine years and only once did I ever have the privilege of a supervisor observing me. Now I know why the Brits have it all over us in the educational field.
Lovely gently humorous book, easy to pick up and read in short bursts. Evokes the yorkshire places I know personally, and brings back many pleasant memories. A pleasant and relaxing read for me and evokes a slightly slower and gentler time of the 70's and 80's. - rather than the mad rush and greed of today.
I do get the impression at times however that Gervaise Phinn is kind in the way he describes certain people , but holds back out of kindness ! Very enjoyable read!
WONDERFUL GREAT HILARIOUS I LOVED IT.
As a fellow Yorkshireman I find these books a real treat to read as he has a typical Yorkshire sense of humour and is able to relate his experiences in a most amusing way. Whether he really experienced all the stories that he relates in his books we will never know but that does not matter as most are typical of Yorkshire folk and many readers will be able to relate to similar experiences. I love the character of Connie the caretaker who rules the education centre where conferences and classes are held and her priceless expressions especially her malapropisms.
